indonesia - Bali - Berewa - 26 to 30 april 2011

Tuesday – 26 April 2011 – Lakey, Berewa – sun, cloudy – 0 to ½ metre waves

We were up early for the car to the airport but the flight was incorrect so we had another hour to wait. We finally arrived at the airport. Merpati wanted 200 000 for surfboard but settled for 80 000 when I produced my receipt from Merpati in bali for my board. The domestic airport tax was 11 000 each. The flight was late and we arrived at Bali at 2pm.
We had KFC, bought 2 tickets for Sumba and organized a driver for 200 000 to get to Berewa. We also stopped to change money which took quite awhile being travelers cheques. The traffic to Berewa was at a crawl and we reached the Legong Keraton Beach Hotel ($105 for double with extra bed) at 4pm. The room had some problems but they got on to fixing them straight way. This hotel is very clean and classy. The pool is worth taking photos of and hotel is located right on the beach where there is reasonable surf. What more could you want. Peter, wife a nd daughter all happy.

We had a swim in the pool and a sunset walk on the beach.

Wednesday – 27 April 2011 – Berewa – sun, cloudy – head height to plus head height waves
I had a great early surf on the reef. Not classic but exciting!

The waves increased in size throughout the morning and I had a surf in the early afternoon but it was doubling up and so it wasn’t very good. Got a few okay waves but the main thing was not to get crushed onto the sandy bottom.
We caught the free shuttle bus to Legian and Jacinta arranged adjustments for her leather jacket. We did a bit of shopping before getting a taxi back to Berewa (approx 50 000 to 60 000)

Tonight was a special BBQ dinner with a Balinese dance performance. Food was okay and the dancing was great. At the end they got the tourists up to teach them to dance. I was up and before I knew it I was finger pointing, swaying and eye extending like a professional dancer. I tried to show her a waltz in return but she freak out a little.

Thursday – 28 April 2011 – Berewa – sun, cloudy – head high plus waves

The waves were messy throughout most of the day. It cleaned up late I the afternoon and I had head high fun waves. The girls sat around the pool.
We caught a taxi to Legian in the evening. Jacinta picked up her leather jacket and bags and we went down the beach restaurants for dinner.

Friday – 29 April 2011 – Berewa – sun, cloudy

I had great early morning surf with head high waves.
I had another surf which was okay but a massive cleanup set eventually washed me right in to shore. I took that as a sign to get onto dry land.

We spent the day around the pool, room and beach.

We had dinner at the restaurant behind the hotel.

Indonesia - Bali - Berewa to Balian - 4 april 2010

I had 1 metre early surf at Berewa but it crowded out quickly. The second day strapping my knee and it was a bit sore in and out of the water.

I rang Ayu’s at Balian to book a room, as well as transport to Balian. The cost of the transport was 300 000 rupiah.

I said my bye-byes to the guys. I paid up money owing for the room and party and drove up to Balian.

The trip up was the usual heavy traffic of cars, trucks, etc. The road was okay to deeply cracked and potholed. The road passes through a number of large towns to small villages, as well as, rice fields. Just near Soka the countryside becomes very pretty with terraced rice fields with ocean or mountain backdrops.

The journey took about 1 ½ hours and the weather was cloudy.

On arrival, I settled into Ayu’s, strapped up my knee and had solid head high surf on the lefts. The strap worked better this time, though it still hurt.

Indonesia - Bali - Berewa - Surf - April 2010

Berewa is a beach break with some nearby reefs. There are a few banks on the beach that start to break well with various tide changes. The reefs are at least a metre bigger than the beach but they also need a bigger swell to break.

3 May 2010 - rain cloudy

We had a small 1/2 metre surf in the afternoon. Okay waves. My strapped knee bandage fell off after the first couple of waves.
4 May 2010 - cloudy sunny

We surfed early morning at about 1metre plus . It was fun at first but got crodwed quickly. I padled down and surfed at a number of sandbanks. Overall it was okay. The knee strap was too tight this time and so i could barely move my knee plus the bottom of my leg needed blood.
The leg was a bit sore by the time I got out of the water.

There are only a few placs to stay in Berewa. Some hotels, villas and a couple of homestays. This hotel is on the beach, great pool, spacious and clean rooms and friendly staff.

I caught up with some friends I met in Bali about three years ago. We surfed, bodysurfed and had a birthday party for Nadine and Marty. Baba Guling was part of the feast. Great night.

Indonesia - Bali - Berewa - Bodysurfing - 3 April 2010

The surf was small and the tide high. Bodysurfing wasn't too bad but the sand was a bit gritty down the shorts.

Indonesia - Bali - Berewa Beach - 3 to 4 April 2010

Berewa Beach is about 5 kilometres along the beach from Legian, It is a long walk or catch a taxi.

The beach is relatively quiet. During the mornings and afternoons there are many locals walking, playing and enjoying the coolness from the heat of the day. On the weekends, there are more locals and western and Indonesian visitors.

It's a great place to sit quietly and watch the world go by.

Indonesia - Bali - Legian to Berewa - 3 April 2010

The traffic was wild but got from Legian to Berewa in 1/2 hour. The taxi was about 70 000 rupiah.

This hotel is located 7 kilometres north of Kuta or about a kilometer south of Canggu. The hotel is medium in size with a excellent rooms with a variety of standards for the rooms. Starting from $US 70 but prices are negotiable. All rooms have a balcony, television, air conditioning and bathroom. Internet is free. The hotel and rooms are very clean and well maintained.

The hotel gardens are simple and pretty with grassed areas and coconut trees providing shade on the beachside of the hotel. The pool is pretty with a toddler’s pool attached. Towels are available at the pool bar.

The restaurant is okay for lunch but it is probably better to get a taxi and eat elsewhere at night. We had to send back a number of meals due to freshness and undercooked.

Service was good though they tended to say yes and then nothing happened eg took three calls to get our room cleaned. Overall, they were very friendly and helpful. Reception provides many services.

Here are two free shuttle buses a day to Legian and Kuta. You need to get a taxi back to the hotel.

Worse points: restaurant food was sometimes poor.

Best points: hotel is right on the beach, relaxing atmosphere and comfortable rooms.
