MEBBIN NATIONAL PARK - 7 to 8 SEPTEMBER 2020

MEBBIN NATIONAL PARK

7 SEPTEMBER 2020

WE left Brunswick Heads and drove to Jerusalem National Park. It was a rough steep road towards the end but we eventually made to the start of the Hells Hole Waterfall.

The track was a wide fire trail that after a kilometre reached a junction. We turned left on another fire trail which was much steeper. Along the way, a vine dangled from a tree making a natural swing. We had a few goes and continued. We came to an old earthen/tree bridge and turned right following the creek through rainforest. We criss-crossed the creek a few times until we came to a jumble of boulders. We scrambled over the rocks passing a few deep pools until we reached the waterfall. It was a long way to the bottom. We stayed there for awhile enjoying the solitude, scenery and the sound of the water.

Note: There was a mountain bike track running beside the road at the beginning of the hike. It looked doable but I was a little tired to give a go.

We had lunch and drove to Uki, where we stopped for coffee and cake.

The next stop was Cutters Camp in Mebbin National Park. The final part of this drive was along a dirt road. At one point, the council was doing large roadworks. I thought for sure we were going to get bogged as the road was soft sand.

Later, I went for a bike ride but my chain snapped on the first hill. Luckily, it was only a short walk back.

In the evening, we lit a good campfire and had a few relaxing drinks.

8 SEPTEMBER 2020

It was a restless sleep as Jacinta wasn’t feeling well.

Jacinta continued to sleep and I had a hike to Birrell’s Creek. It was a short but great hike. A steep descent into rainforest then a flat dappled light walk amongst the huge fig trees with their buttress root system and dangling vines. It was eerily quiet. The track opens up at Birrell’s Creek where I wandered along the banks enjoying the quiet time.

Back at camp, we had breakfast and were visited by a number of small birds.
