INDONESIA - BALI - PEMUTERAN - JULY 2015 - PURA, SICK AND OFF THE TRACK

I left Lovina and rode to Pemuteran. I pulled into the Jubawa Hotel and got a nice private air con room for 400 000R with wifi, breakfast and an excellent pool.

After settling in, I walked around the street, along the beach and back to the  hotel then rested. It was a hot walk!

 

I rode to the temple to the east of Pemuteran. The temple - Pura Pabean - had an amazing panoramic view along the coast, the temples were colourfully decorated and there were heaps of monkeys.  I then went west and had a swim at Pemuteran Beach. Later, I  followed some dirt turnoffs further west. I came across locals doing field work, a abseiling tower, a number of beautiful bays and pretty beaches and an army group doing training.

 

Not a good night, as I had food poisoning. The worse I've ever had for pain and it went from 10pm to 3pm. I threw up thinking it was all over but the pain started up again with high temperature and dizziness. Eventually, I slept.

When I woke, I cancelled the snorkel trip to Menjangan and stayed another night. The pains still continue throughout the day though less often till about 1pm. I spend the day trying to sleep and later in the afternoon, I sat and swam at the hotel pool.

The following day, I felt okay enough to bike it back to Balian.

Reflection Pemuteran

The hotel was good, the room was good and the pool great. The service was generally ok but fairly indifferent. Access to the beach is along a few dirt roads/tracks - a bit of a walk. The beach is okay but ordinary as there were a lot of rocks/coral near shore.

Riding the bike around the area was great with heaps of turn offs leading to nowhere and somewhere. In this case, the journey is the fun part.

The big draw card was Menjangan for snorkelling. It was pretty good and it was such a fun easy drift. Yep! I'd go back but probably not for awhile has it is out of the way.

This hotel is located at the east end of the beach. On either side of the beach end of the hotel are traditional fishing boats and fishermen homes. The beach in front of the hotel has black sand and there is okay snorkeling a short walk pass the jetty where the large boat is moored.

The rooms at the hotel are quoted in $US but can be given in Indonesian rupiah. The prices for the rooms vary according to standard of the room $US and upwards. All prices are negotiable. Eg we paid $us 100 for two $us 120 rooms.

The rooms are excellent and large with an open bathroom.

The service at the hotel is excellent. The reception will organize tours and transport. Prices are negotiable.

Internet is available at your room for 50 000r an hour or at reception. The pool is small and simple. The restaurant is nice with good food though it tends to get quite hot due to the shared roof with the kitchen. Sea Rovers (diving and snorkeling organizers) are located at the beach end of the hotel. It is run by Paul an Englishman who is always up for a chat. The hotel gardens are simple and pleasant.

Worse points: mosquitoes were plentiful early evening and morning. Mosquito coils are provided.

Best points: pool was excellent as there was little breeze.

Indonesia - Bali - Pemuteran - 2009

Pemuteran is located on the western side of the north coast of Bali. It is about 3-4 hours drive from the airport. It is a quiet one street village mainly consisting of large hotels on the beach side and smaller cheaper hotels on the road side. There is a money changer across the road from Jubawa Homestay. Most restaurants are along the beach but some are along the road.

The beaches are black sand and suitable for swimming.

WEST OF PEMUTERAN

Taman Nasional Bali Barat - trekking

Teluk Terima - Makam Jayaprana - temple on hill with great views; short nature trek with guide from park headquarters.

Palau Menjangan Island – several snorkel spots, best is anchor wreck - boat from Labuhan Lalang, last boat 11am, basic accommodation here. Boats can be organized to leave from Pemuteran - Sea Rovers have a speed boat.

 

Banyuwedang – little west – hot springs exposed with tides

PEMUTERAN

White/Black sand beach, coral reefs and fish.

Walks along the beach and to the temple on point.

Turtle hatchery – donation to release turtle.

Sunset and sunrise cruises.

Pulaki – grape vines

Pura Pulaki - 5 km east – coast cliff temple with monkeys.

Pantai gondola – east – white sand beach ??? - Snorkeling undeveloped – next to sewerage treatment works. Forget this place!!!

Celukanbawang – port

Air panas Banjar – hot springs with gardens and restaurant. Best mornings or evenings. Restaurant closed when we went. Great spot to mingle with the locals.

Pondok Wisata Gray Sari – organize treks to countryside

Brahma Vihara Arama – Buddhist monastery – donation. Great views and very relaxing. You can stay at the monastery or nearby at Banjar Hills Retreat.

Continue further up road to Pedewa – aga village. Locals said that it was a boring village.
