Indonesia - Bali - Balian - 4 to 7 April 2010

I turned off the main North West road at Balian. At the turnoff, there is a small village with a number of shops, small supermarket and market area.


The turnoff road is narrow and leads pass a number of guest houses/hotels until it reaches the sand at Balian Beach. Along the road there are a number of places to stay from fan rooms to air conditioned rooms. Some places have a small pool.

There are a number of places to eat from restaurants to the warungs at the night market at the main road turnoff.

I stayed at Ayu’s which is at the top of the hill overlooking the beach. The food is good and cheap here. The rooms are fan and the price varies according to the state of the room. Breakfast is included in the room price.

On the hill leading down to the beach there are a number of spots to sit and view the coast and the surfing. It is nice to sit in these spots at sunset while having a beer.

The beach is black sand with a river emptying out in the middle of the beach. There is also another river emptying into the sea at the southern end of the beach. The beach is nice for walking and sitting. Swimming is not the best due to strong currents and murky water.

Balian is a great place to stay. there are good waves and good coastal walks and scenery. The local people are very friendly. I stayed for a few days before travelling on to Sumbawa, Indonesia. It is a great place for meeting people from all over the globe.

During my time there, I met Tony and Ross. Ross and I met a number of times later in this trip throughout Indonesia.

There are a large number of unpowered riverside camping sites which are situated on manicured lawns, along our river flats on the head waters of the Karuah River. Limited number of powered sites are available. There are hot showers in the amenities block and a coin-operated laundry facility. Camp fires are allowed on unpowered sites. The kiosk sells ice creams, takeaway food, devonshire teas, cold drinks, bread, milk, gas and ice with a small selection of personal and basic provisions. No fresh fruit, vegetables or meats are available.

AUSTRALIA - Bonnie Hills - January 2009

 

We camped at Bonnie Hills for about a week. The beaches were great and there were lots of places to visit.

Bonny Hills is situated on hills between North Haven and Lake Cathie. The nearest large town is Port Macquarie. From the south turn off the Pacific Highway at Kew.

Bonny Hills is a small, quiet town on the NSW mid north coast. There are two nearby beaches – Barletts Beach , which is small, surrounded by small cliffs and rocky points and Rainbow Beach, which is a beautiful, long sandy beach. The southern corner of Rainbow Beach is a patrolled beach.

The town is quiet with a general store and petrol.

There are two camping areas:

Hawks Nest is on the northern side of Port Stephens, to the south of Myall Lakes National Park and next to the township of Teagardens. The area has long, unspoilt beaches and a number of national parks with short and long walks.

Singapore and Thailand - Phuket - Karon Beach - october 2006

 

We had an overnight stay in Singapore before flying to Phuket for 10 days in October 2006. We based ourselves at Karon Beach. The beach was excellent and there were shops nearby for eating, shopping and massages.

The restaurants were all good and prices varied. some of the cheapest tasted the best to me.

The shopping was good as the quality of the goods was good and there was a lot to choose from. For example, three years later I'm still wearing the t-shits and boardshorts. The massages were great though I did prefer the foot massage.

The beach was excellent with long white sand, patrolled, rocky points at either end. It was also a short walk to Kata Beach.

There were plenty of activities to do such as visit other beaches, elephant walks, etc.

The locals were friendly to indifferent. On the beach, I had a  number of chats with the locals and  when shopping they acted with indifference.

Austria - july 2006

We spent a week camped in summer near Interlaken in the west of Austria. The camping area was beside a lake with heaps of activities. The scenery was mountainous with villages and towns spread along the valley and high slopes. The towns and houses were of 'old world' appeal. There were many walks.

Gili Air is the closest Gili Island to the mainland. It is very relaxed and quiet. Transport on the island is horse and cart, bicycle and walking. There is a track/road around the circumference of the island. A paved road runs from the harbour through the centre of the island. A number of tracks run in various directions all over the island. The harbour is a quiet affair.

Accommodation

There is a lot of accommodation that is cheap and clean. Rooms vary from fan to air con. There are also a number of ‘hotels’ that have passed their ‘used by’ date. A number of new hotels have been built near the harbour. You can book before you go or find accommodation when you arrive. Upon arrival there are many touts near the jetty that will take you to available accommodation.

there are restaurants spread out along the island though most are on the south, east and north coast in sections.

Indonesia - Bali - Nusa Lembongan - 1999

Nusa Lembongan is an island off the east coast of Bali. It is 4.5 km long and 2.5 km wide and 50 m high at its highest point. It has two villages and is well set-up for tourists. There are spectacular views, crystal clear water, the sound of the surf, gentle breezes, little traffic, no hawkers and no stress on this island. It is one of three islands in the group, the others being Nusa Penida and Ceningan.
Climate
There are two seasons, the Rainy season from November to March, the Dry season from April to October. The islands are quite dry averaging only about 1000 mm of rain annually. The average temperature only varies from 28°C to 30° C. But the humidity increases markedly during the wet season.

Indonesia - Bali - Bike tour - 2008

There are a number of downhill cycle tours through the Balinese countryside. They all seem to offer similar activities but the route taken by bike is different.

We went on the Bali eco tour. The tour agent recommended this as she said this group was better with children.

We were picked up by air con van and driven to a number of locations in Ubud picking up other riders. There were three family groups in all.

The first stop was by some steep and beautiful rice field terraces. They made excellent backdrops for photos.

The next stop was Kintamani, where we sat in a restaurant and had breakfast. The views over Gunung Batur and Danau Batur were excellent.

The next stop was to pick up the bicycles. All bikes were adjusted for each person and safety instructions were given. We were given time to cycle around to get use to the bikes.

The guides lead us to a number of venues at a leisurely pace along quiet rural roads. A van and truck followed in the rear in case there were any problems.

The main guide was very informative and very alert for any dangers or problems.

We stopped at a:

1. Temple. We were explained Hinduism and the function of the temple in Balinese society
2. Primary/elementary school. The kids were on a break when we arrived. We caused a certain amount of mayhem as we walked through the classrooms and chatted with the teachers and the students.
3. Home. We walked through the family compound and were explained the functions of all the buildings. Some members of the family compound were present.
4. Rice field. Once again the informative guide explained the importance of rice and the stages of rice growth. Ducks were wandering through the fields eating insects.

While all this was happening, we were greeted as we cycled by small children yelling ‘hello, hello’. I was in Bali in the early 80’s and this reminded so much of a time that I thought was long gone.

We finished with lunch at the company owner’s family restaurant. The food was a selection of various dishes and it was excellent. Finally, a bit tired we were driven back in air con comfort to our hotels

Gunung Batur is a large volcano with a lake at the bottom of the crater with a group of smaller volcanic cones.

There are villages on the upper rim from Penlokan to Penulisan. A road leads down to the bottom of the crater from Penlokan. There are a number of villages at the base of the crater – Buahan, Kedisan, Toya Bungkah, Songan and Toya Mampeh.

There is an entry fee for entering the base of the crater.

Where to stay

There are hotels/restaurants in the villages along the rim at Penelokan and Kintamani.

In the crater, there are accommodations at Kedisan and Toya Bungkah.

Note We stayed in Kedisan for about four nights. It was very quiet, enjoyable to explore and very scenic.

Best Points: volcano climb, walking around the area, views

Worse Points: sellers to a degree.
