24 FEBRUARY
STANLEY TO JULIUS
RIVER
We left Stanley in
beautiful weather with only a relatively light wind. We were off on a TARKINE
adventure.
It started off past
dairy farms and forestry areas. The dairy herds were huge.
A turn off to the
right and a 6 km gravel road brought us to TROWUTTA ARCH. A easy walk through
rainforest to the most amazing arch and just past that was a sinkhole with
steep sides filled with water. On top of the water was a thick and bright green
algae. It was stunning and so unusual.
The next stop was the
TAYATEA BRIDGE. It was a great place for a view of the Arthur River.
Next, the MILKSHAKE
HILLS. We walked the shorter hike through a wet eucalypt forest. In parts it
was very open.
We continued on to LAKE
CHISHOLM. This hike was excellent – rainforest, huge ferns and a large sinkhole
filled with water. It was very peaceful sitting around the edge of the water
watching the dragonflies.
Time to stop. We
pulled into the JULIUS RIVER MOTORHOME SITE our set ourselves up in a great
site for the afternoon. We collected heaps of wood and had a long fire that
lasted till the early evening.
