MUNMORAH COASTAL TRACK AND WYBUNG HEAD MTB - 15 MAY 2019

A surf wander  - North Avoca, Birdie Beach and Frazer Park – showed very ordinary waves.

I settled for an awesome mountain bike ride at Munmorah SCA along the coastal track. It had overgrown somewhat and had eroded more heavily in parts. At the end of the track, I continued on to Wybung Head and rode to the higher and lower headland. Great views along the coast and a steep fun ride to each of the headlands. The coastal track was best on the return leg. About 3 kilometres of downhill through all types of terrain – steep tracks, erosion obstacles, thick and close heath, sand and deep sand, curves, open areas and under low trees. Heaps of fun and concentration.

I checked Soldiers Beach on the way back and sat and watched the waves with a coffee. There were a few guys out but they weren’t getting many waves and even those were very short.

SOLDIERS BEACH - FRAZER PARK - SURF - 30 OCTOBER 2018

A beautiful morning - blue sky and warm.



I decided on a north meander. I checked the surf at a number of beaches. North Avoca beach wasn't looking good. Shelley Beach had potential but didn't look too good. Soldiers Beach had a reasonable looking surf.

I paddled out at mid beach. There were a number of surfers out but luck was with me and I got about five good waves and a number of so-so waves. I enjoyed myself.

Back on shore I got a cappuccino and took surfing shots.

Next stop was Munmorah SCA. I had a look at Red Ochre Beach but the surf didn't look good and the wind was strong. Frazer Park was more protected from the wind. The surf wasn't good so I had a swim and a wander along the beach.

A surf at North Avoca Beach. Not the best but there were one or two okay waves.

Later, I had an ocean kayak heading north of Patonga.

There was a strong tidal current in parts as it was just before high tide. Overall. it was rough and pretty exciting. No tipping over ... so far.

A mountain bike ride at Bouddi on the Turkey, NW Ridge and Strom tracks. A good ride - controlled and faster, which made it  fun and enjoyable. I  sort of feel I'm improving as I getting through spots I couldn't on previous rides. Still. there are a couple of skills I wished I could do.

A surf check.

The surf wasn't too good so I had an early hike at Kincumba Mountain on the Kanning Track. 

A pretty hike with huge boulders, ferns, a cave, bush flowers and a background of bird song.

Another surf check. I ended up at Soldiers Beach and had  good waves and not many out. A fun time.

Another fun surf at Soldiers Beach - a right then swing back onto the left. Noone else was doing it so I was lucky and had heaps of good waves.

SOLDIERS BEACH - SURFING - 25 JANUARY 2018

Jacinta and I drove to Soldiers Beach in the morning.

It was a great morning. Jacinta sat on the beach and baked and I had two surfing sessions. the first was small but fun and the second was bigger with a few nice waves.

Finally settled on a mountain bike ride on the coastal track at Munmorah SCA.

It is one of my favourite rides. It starts as a gradual climb until Wybung Road. At Wybung Road it is just about downhill all the way back - steep sections, eroded spots, thick bushed, narrow track, wide track, soft deep sand, steps and a short winding boardwalk. So much variety.

I finished drenched in sweat and in need of a swim. I drove to Soldiers Beach and ended up having a small but fun surf.
