AUSTRALIA - Sydney - reunion tucker. gillett, dunn - 30 october 2011
I drove to Sydney to catch up with Mark and Bruce. I hadn't seen Bruce for three decades.
Bruce was more or less the same. His room was festooned with arachy slogans and pictures. Good to see he still supports the unmainstreamed.
Mark was good though he needs to change his swear words... the word 'stupid' does not cut it as cussing.
We had coffee, then wandered around a church and the local area. Next was lunch, where mark totally confused the poor waitress.
We sat around and watched Bruce's street view.
We hugged (not likely)
we cried (not really)
we said our good-byes (we could do that)
then sauntered off to our various worlds.
A great day!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

CENTRAL COAST - Spring Creek - kayak - 27 october 2011
It was a cloudy day with the chance of rain. i drove to Emu Drive, San Remo which is ner the mouth of Wallarah Creek and launched the kayak.
The creek starts off wide and passes under a bridge. There are a few dwellings along the creek's northern bank. The southern bank is natural. Eventually, I reached the junction of Wallarah and Spring Creek.
I took the turn into Spring Creek. for a long while it was crowded with dwellings on the east and northern banks. The south and west bank remained natural. After a time the dwellings stopped and the landscape was more natural with bird and lizard life.
I came to another bridge which had a rubble strewn crossing just before it. I continued on for some distance until the creek branched off in to two opposite directions that was strewn with branches and logs. It wasn't passable.
The return journey took a total of 3 hours with a strong wind against me on the return leg.
A good paddle with a variety of landscapes.

AUSTRALIA - Canberra - tidbinbilla nature reserve - Gilbraltar Rocks - HIKE - 7 October 2011
We headed off to Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve to hike it to Gilbraltar Rocks.
The walk startd as a nice stroll through grassland and light bush. Soon the track endede and we followed a fire trail up and up and up. Eventually, we reached a small bench and then it was a steep short downhill walk to the start of the rocks.
The trail turned into a track and meandered up and amongst the large boulders that formed Gilbraltar Rocks. It was very misty when we arrived but after a short time the mist cleared to a higher level providing a view of the immediate area. It was a lot of fun scrambling over the rocks and peering over the abyss below.
The walk back was hard has well due to the steepness of the trail.
It took 2 1/2 hours for the trek. This included a lot of mucking around on the rocks.

AUSTRALIA - Canberra - Gillett Garden - 7 October 2011
I was up early and Mark was out on a cycling race so I wandered around his garden getting some images on a cold misty morning.
AUSTRALIA - Canberra - War Memorial museum - 6 October 2011
Our journey on our cycles took us to the War Memorial in Canberra.
The memorial has a presence that commands respect and this is highlighted as one journeys through the various arenas of Australia's conflicts.
AUSTRALIA - Canberra - Floriade - 6 October 2011
While on our cycle ride around Canberra, we stopped and visited the Floride festival.
There were a lot of flowers and they were all tastfully arranged in patterns that were more clearly visible from the ferris wheel. We had a good time tip toeing through the tulips.
In another part of the festival there was a bonsai exhibition. It must take a lot of time to produce the look they give. Enjoyable!
AUSTRALIA - Canberra - MTB - 6 October 2011
I arrived in Canberra, ACT the previous night catching up with an old mate, Mark.
The next morning, we went for a bike ride around Canberra. The bike tracks, roads and paths were excellent. It was a great experience riding on a decent road bike. The bikes made the journey quite easy.
The weather was cloudy and cold but it remained dry while we were cycling.
All up we cycled 30 kilometres.

AUSTRALIA - Nightcap NP - Protestors Falls - HIKE - 29 September 2011
I arrived at Protestors Falls with the wind picking up and a light drizzle. There were no cars in the parking area. All mine!!!
The walk started as an elevated boardwalk through the rainforest. Nearer to the creek the boardwalk changed to a track that followed the bank of the creek past numerous cascades. This continued until the waterfall where there was a small rock scramble to get a view of the waterfall pool.
The water fell over the falls in a vertical drop. Very pretty! The pool is not for swimming as it is the habitat of an endangered frog.
Well worth the drive and walk.
AUSTRALIA - Whian Whian State Forest - Rocky Creek Dam - HIKE - 29 September 2011
I was actually heading to the big scrub walk but the road had new cattle grates that had deep holes on either side. The drops were a bit too much for my car.
I checked the map and Rocky Creek Dam was only a short distance down the road. On arrival at the parking area of the am, I was surprised by the amenities (expecting nothing much) – playground, water cover, toilets etc.
The walks were marked by picture code. The first walk wound down the hill to the dam. Nice views.
There was a near perfect road crossing the dam. On one side was the dammed water and the creek far below on the other. The road turned to trail that wound up the hill. On the other side of the hill was a spillway. The spillway was crossable but it felt strange walking on it for some reason.
Across the spillway the trail wound through creaking forest for quite a distance until joining up with the big scrub walk of Nightcap NP (the track I was originally going to follow). At this point, I doubled back a short distance and took another trail that lead to the creek.
At the creek was a high boardwalk to view the creek (had platypuses but I didn’t see them) and it continued to a small water floating bridge which was fun to walk across. The creek here was a mass of lily pads and flowers.
I continued on and recrossed the dam road and back to the car park.
This walk had a lot of variety and was easy.AUSTRALIA - Lennox Head - Surf - 27 September 2011
The wind was howling but the inside break at Lennox Head was fairly protected at times.
The waves were off and on.
The waves were off and on.
AUSTRALIA - Ballina - Ballina Island Loop - Kayak - 28 September 2011
I started off early to hopefully take advantage of the tides.
I parked at the boat ramp at North Creek and launched off a small sandy beach. I paddled upstream and under a large bridge. There was quite a variety of birdlife near the bridge.
The landscape became more natural after turning to the right after the bridge. The bank vegetation was mangroves. There were a few smaller turnoffs long the creek. Eventually, the natural landscape gave way to suburban streets.
I reached the Richmond River and paddled downriver towards the ocean. The shoreline at this point was very developed.
Eventually, I reached the aquatic pool and the landscape changed to beaches and small coastal dunes. I continued onwards but was forced shore just before the turnoff to North Creek due to the strong currents and breaking waves.
I dragged the kayak to the bridge and relaunched at North Creek. The paddling was hard on this last leg due to the strong outgoing tide,
It was a good kayak taking about 3 hours.
AUSTRALIA - Lennox Head - Lake Ainsworth - Kayak - 27 September 2011
The sun had risen for about an hour so I carried and dragged the kayak to the edge of Lake Ainsworth.
The lake looked glassy and vegetation along the shoreline was reflected in the water. The western and northern side of the lake is the best. The trees semi submerged in the water made for great obstacles to paddle weave through.
At the far northern end, I found a break in the thick vegetation that allowed me to pass to the shallow flooded edge of the lake. This part was very pretty with near perfect reflections, semi submerged paperback trees and a green cover of duck weed.
This was a short and pretty paddle.
AUSTRALIA - Lennox Head - Lake Ainsworth - HIKE - 26 September 2011
There is a track that skirts the edge of the western side of the lake. It meanders through tea trees, paperbarks and banksias. Towards the north western end the track passes close to the lake where the water is thick with duck weed.
The walk continues on but the track becomes more difficult to follow.
The northern end of the lake is blocked by the sport and recreation camp. The southern end follows the road. There are a number of spots along here and the southern edge for swimming.
I found a snake skin along the way.
This was a short, pretty and easy walk.
AUSTRALIA - Lennox Head - September 2011
We camped at Lake Ainsworth Tourist Park at Lennox Haed for a week.
The weather varied from warm and sunny to wet and windy. The nights were a bit cold as well.
The girls, Chloe and Kate spent their time hanging around the lake and wandering.
Jacinta went for short walks and caught up with an old friend. She spent a lot of time at the beach and around the cmp site.
I had one okay surf at seven mile beach, kayaked Lake Ainsworth and Ballina Island, walked around Lake Ainsworth, Rocky Creek Dam and Protestors Falls and cycled around the local area heaps.
It rained a lot but we still had a fun time!

CENTRAL COAST - Wamberal - surf - 23 September 2011
It was a pretty small day. Glenn and I went for a first swim in the the new warming season.
The water was a bit chilly at first but was okay.
There were small waves breaking with a mixture out in the water. I took some images of surfing, skis, bodysurfing and SUPing.

CENTRAL COAST - Kincumba Mountain - MTB - 22 September 2011
The weather was warm and sunny... so off for a cycle. I chose Kincumba Mountain as the tracks are relatively flat which would be less harmful to my knee injury.
On arrival, I had the place to myself.
The tracks varied from trails to bush tracks leading to a number of lookouts.
I sat for awhile overlooking the view of Avoca lagoon and beach. Very nice!

CENTRAL COAST - Ourimbah Creek - car bogged - 16 September 2011
I was off for a kayak.
I studied the map to find a launch spot for Ourimbah Creek. It seemed to me that I found a good spot off Fleet Close. So off I went.
The dirt road was very deeply rutted but staying on the higher parts of the road...no worries. I went quite a distance and was getting a little to confident. There was one more steep section to drive and I'd be close enough to the creek. Well, I should have checked. I went over the crest then 'Bam', the base of the car was sitting on the crest with no traction for the wheels.
I tried to dig and put some supports under the tyres but it was no use. A call to the NRMA and one hour later I was out. The rescuer informed me I was in an informal bike track. Godd judgement on my part.
Then I picked a better spot to park and launch the kayak.

CENTRAL COAST - surf - September 2011
The waves in september were clean, small and lots of fun.
I wandered around a few beaches on the central coast and got some images of some of the places... terrigal, wamberal, pelican and birdie beaches.

CENTRAL COAST - Wamberal - surf - 21 September 2011
I went for an early surf at Wamberal. There were nice fun right waves in the north corner with just two friends out.
We had it to ourselves for a while but about 9ish more surfers appeared.
I got out did a few things and returned with CD. There were still nice waves in front of he club house. CD took photos of surfing and me being an idiot on the beach.
A great fun day!

CENTRAL COAST - Ourimbah Creek - kayak - 16 September 2011
A sunny day with a light wind. Off for a kayak.
I decided to try to launch from a dirt road off Tuggerah. It looked good but unfortunately, the car became stuck on the high side of crest. I rang the NRMA, and and hour later I was on the move again.
I parked and launched near the bridge on Wyong Road. Luck was with me and against me as I lost the oar then the kayak then the oar again on launching, then nearly capsizing. i figured it couldn't get much worst so away I went.
The creek began to surprise me after I went under Wyong Road. There were lots of birds to be seen and heard. Further along, There were a number of water dragons on the shore and in overhanging branches. even a turtle was basking on a group of floating sticks.
At the weir near the railway bridge, I had to carry the kayak over the rocks. From this point on, the creek started to fill with fallen trees and branches. These were fun to find a way to pass - some i went over and some i went under.
Eventually, the water became shallower and a large tree put an end to the journey. i walked around for awhile enjoying the solitude and eating lunch.
It was a great kayak!

It was heaps of fun. - riding through pools of water and clayish mud, some jumps and rock throwing.
Monday, August 29, 2011
CENTRAL COAST - Piles Creek - kayak - 27 august 2011
I had an early kayak at Piles Creek.
Firstly, I paddled down a mist shrouded Mooney Creek until I reached Piles Creek on the left. The beginnings were mangroves and everything was very still and quiet.
The mangroves gave way in parts to rocks and forest. I continued until I reached the suspension bridge. At this point, the creek became impassable due to rocks.
I came ashore and wandered other the bridge and around the area.
On the return journey, I paddle up two creeks on the left bank. The first went a short distance and was blocked by a large fallen tree. The second, wound its way through mangroves and bushland. It was a lot of fun as it was narrow and slightly overgrown. I beached at the junction of two smaller creeks and had a walk around.
time: 2 hours.

CENTRAL COAST - Mooney Mooney Creek - kayak - 16 august 2011
It was a nice sunny day with a slight breeze. I met everyone at the creek and off we went.
this time, i went downstream. There were a lot of turnoffs amongst the mangroves which i followed and thusly lost track of the others.
It was sort of prehistoric paddling amongst the mangrove trees and a lot of fun. at one point, i came across a pocket of rainforest and had a walk around.
I caught up with everyone at the end and we had coffee and cakes.
fun day!

CENTRAL COAST - Munmorah SCA - North Birdie and Wybung Head - HIKE - 19 july 2011
What a day! I just had an hour and a hour surf at birdie beach in great waves with noone out for the first hour. Unfortunately, with the other surfers came the wind.
I went for a walk to the headland at North Birdie. This area is nude beach and it was well used and paraded.
Anyway, the lagoon was small and interesting and the headland was a nice rock hop. It became too difficult to cross at one point so I turned back and drove to Wybung Head.
This was only a short walk but it had great views along the coast to the north and south.
CENTRAL COAST - Kantandra Reserve - HIKE - 16 July 2011
I parked at Kantandra at the end of Kantandra street.
I followed the track to Seymour Pond, which was pretty. I then followed the Waterman track through rainforest skirting the various water flows to Seymour Pond. This walk was easy and very calming.
The track lead upwards towards St Johns Lookout. I didn't go to the lookout but followed the track around the base of the cliffs below the lookout. The cliffs were high and overhanging in some places. very spectacular.
I eventually joined up with Graves Track which lead back to the parking area.
The walk took just about two and half hours.
CENTRAL COAST - Terrigal Haven n Forrester - surf - July 2011
The haven had some big sets but bumpy conditions. Forries was big.
A movie was being filmed so there were tow-ins and a lot of film equipment around.

CENTRAL COAST - Mangrove Creek - kayak - 9 July 201
Mangrove Creek is next to Popran NP. I checked it out the other day before a walk and it looked good with a good launch/parking spot near junction of Mangrove Creek and another creek.
I decided to kayak up Popran Creek into Wentworth Valley. I couldn't find a good launch/parking spot due to mangroves or step banks. I drove back to mty original site but there were a couple of guys there launchiung and going downriver son I decided to go upriver.
It was a hard paddle as the tide was against me both ways.
It was a pretty paddle with cattle drinking at the water's edge and a few birds sunning in the overhanging trees.
CENTRAL COAST - Bouddi NP - Strom n Turkey Trail - MTB - 8 July 2011
At the bottom of a few runs there were pools of mud. I went through a few and decided to take one of them at speed as i was feeling more confident. All the other pools were very shallow but this one was a foot deep. Consequently, the spray soaked me but luckily, I didn't come off.
It was a good workout!
CENTRAL COAST - Wamberal - surf - 7July 2011
Great day! Seven nice fun breaks along the beach. There is footage of Rob, Jim, Micheal and Jeckle.

CENTRAL COAST - Popran National Park – Mount Olive, Emerald Pool, Donovan’s Forest - HIKE - 5 July 2011
I set the GPS for Ironbark Road. The road was labeled sealed and unsealed but the last 200 metres were 4w drive to national park car park.
The day was sunny but strong wind was predicted. The wind increased through the walk but it wasn’t a problem. The planned walk entailed Mount Olive, Emerald pool and Donovan’s forest.
The walk started as a trail with a variety of wild flowers growing along the edges. The bottlebrushes were in full bloom in shades of red and yellow.
Returning along the track, I followed the trail to the turnoff for Emerald Pool. This was fun track that ran beside a small creek that skirted to Hominy Creek. Hominy Creek had a flow of water running over sandstone. In parts it funneled, formed small pools or cascaded widely over the sandstone.
A track leads down 50 metres to Emerald Pool. It was a very pretty sight. The pool is a light green and deep. I thought about a swim but he water was icy cold. I sat down on a sunny slab of sandstone and enjoyed the serenity.
I backtracked a short distance, then followed the track to trail 248. At junction of the tracks I took the trail to the carpark via Donovan’s Forest. The forest in contrast with the surrounding area of open bush to a shaded forest that was floored with bracken fern that swayed in the breeze.
I continued along the trail to the carpark.
Thoughts
This walk would be better by cycling along the trails.
CENTRAL COAST - Wyong River - kayak - 3 July 2011
I took a turnoff to the left that went under a low bridge. The creek was narrow with vegetation overhanging the banks. Along the way, I over landed it twice through blocked sections. The way back was great as the water was fast moving and there was a section of small rapids.
I don’t think this creek can normally be navigated by kayak but here had been a lot of rain of late which had raised the water level.

CENTRAL COAST - Terrigal en Plein-air Painting - 18 june 2011
I was asked by a friend to video local artists that were running an informal competition in conjunction with the Five Lands Walk on the Central Coast.
I spent the day walking around filming and talking to the artists who were located at various points around Terrigal Beach and the Haven.
It was very interesting watching them paint. The style of each painter was very different so it would have been hard to judge a winner.
The artists themselves were very interesting people with a variety of happy outlooks upon life.
We talked about perfection, painting style, colour, techniques, scenery, loves and likes. It was a pleasure to meet these people and hear their views on life.
I have embedded a shortened video version of the day and videos of each individual artist. The videos show the artists painting followed by a short conversation.

Indonesia - Bali - Legian - 21 to 22 May 2011
Saturday 21 May 2011 – Padangbai and Legian – sun
I had an early walk to Bias Tugal beach. The new hotel at the top didn’t eventuate but it has left a scar of bulldozed terrace landscape with quarter finished buildings. The beach and the warungs lining it are still the same. I was early so no one else was there a swim under these conditions was excellent.
I walked back, had breakfast got ready and Nyoman arrived.
We drove to Legian and I arranged an airport pick up for Sunday. I stayed at the Kumala Hotel.
I wandered around and did a bit of shopping which finished on the beach having a few beers and watching a drum performance at sunset.
Sunday 22 May 2011 - Legian – sun
A wandering shopping day today. I bought DVDs, sunglasses, hats, scarves, bed cover, sit hammock and cds. In between this I had a hot stone massage.
I went down the beach for sunset and watched the world while having a few beers, then dinner. I heard jazz music coming from the cocoon so I spent the last few hours in a classy bar sitting on a lounge by the pool of the ever changing colours. The music was a fittin end to the trip.
Nyoman was there to take me to the airport. His son and wife were also with him. It was nice to meet the family.
The red tape at airport was quick and painless but the flight wasn’t. I am always amazed how people sleep on a plane. I was awake all night. I arrived at Sydney stuffed but customs was quick and before I knew it I was on a shuttle bus fast asleep and on my way home.
Indonesia - Bali - Padangbai - 19 to 21 May 2011
Thursday 19 may 2011 – Balian and Padangbai – sun, cloudy, rain
I surfed the river rights 1m to 1 1/2m. It was good at first and I was on my own. A few guys paddled out as the wind began to increase and within a short time it was feathery and weak.
I decided to go to Padangbai. I paid my bill which was about 850 000 for five days total. The room was 120 000 per night with breakfast. I shared a car with an Aussie girl to Kuta and continued onwards to Padangbai.
I stayed at Kerta’s as the rooms had improved greatly and it was a good deal for 120 000.
I had to change the sim on my mobile which turned out to be a drama (problem wasn’t sim but receprion). I booked Su’s II in Legian for Saturday and Nyoman to pick up at 10 am.
Friday 20 may 2011 – Padangbai – sun, cloudy, rain
I had an early walk around Padangbai and the local markets. After breakfast, I walked to Blue Lagoon. The snorkeling was good with heaps of fish and some coral. There were a few stingers in the water. I lied on the deck chair till mid afternoon enjoying the sun and bouts of rain.
I met an Aussie guy who had his wallet stolen on the ferry from Lombok. The crew were helpful in finding the thief but were unsuccessful. I loaned him 1 000 000 rupiah and left him my address to mail a cheque, probably sometime in July. The exact same story came from a friend of mine (Greg) 30 years ago. Time marches on but the same things happened.

Saturday 14 may 2011 – Legian, Balian – sun, cloudy – surf 1m to head height
Nyoman arrived with Ross at 6:30am for drive to Balian. We stopped at a few places and arrived at Balian at 9am. We settled into Ayu’s and I got a nice room for 120 000 with a view across the river right hand wave.
We went for surf on the main left and right. It was a metre to head height and glassy though crowded conditions. It was still a lot of fun.
I had lunch then a sleep. I went for an afternoon surf on the river rights. It was 1m to head height with a couple of barrels.
Sunday 15 may 2011 – Balian – sun, cloudy – 1m to below head height
We went for a walk to Mejan Beach but the tide was too high. The conditions were cleaner and so it showed the break had potential.
After breakfast, I surfed the river right with waves 1 metre to just below head height.
I slept in the afternoon and didn’t bother with surf (a bit small).
Monday 16 may 2011 – Balian – sun, cloudy
I had ttwo excellent surfs on the river rights which were excellent and solid. There with only a few guys on both occassions.Tuesday 17 may 2011 – Balian – sun, cloudy
I surfed the main break and great waves at the river rights. Good waves 1m to head height.
Wednesday 18 may 2011 – Balian - sun, cloudy
There were waves in the morning but very crowded and no one seemed happy. My virus was stronger today so I stayed out of the water. Most people seemed grumpy today maybe because of the morning crowded surf.
indonesia - Bali - Legian - 13 to 14 may 2011
Friday 13 may 2011 – Legian - sun, cloudy, rain
I got a car at 8am for Tambolaka airport. The drive was uneventful though the roads were windy at first then dry and dusty. The airport terminal was the smallest ever. I went through customs, checked in to flight, and paid tax in a room about 10m by 7m then sat in the waiting room . I had a 2 hour wait. The flight took just over an hour with Wing Air.
I got a taxi at the airport to Kumala Hotel. I caught up with Ken then we both went to do various organizing. For me, it was massage, eating and some shopping.
Ken caught his plane and I went for dinner and drink at ‘the cocoon’.
